Light as a Feather
This sculpture was created in weathering steel, allowing the surface to naturally change and develop with time and exposure to the elements. Perforated steel within the feather gives the piece transparency and movement, allowing sunlight, shadows, and the surrounding environment to become part of the work.
After sunset, the sculpture takes on a second life. A warm white LED running through the center illuminates the feather from within, while solar energy collected during the day powers the light at night. The central glow follows the feather's shaft, softly illuminating the surrounding mesh and creating an entirely different experience after dark.
That relationship is intentional: powered by nature rather than drawing unnecessarily from it. The sun that reveals the sculpture during the day provides the energy that allows it to continue its story at night.
For me, the feather represents something carried forward—a connection between those who came before us, those here now, and those who will come after. The changing steel, sunlight, stored energy, and nighttime glow all become part of that same cycle.
A gift by day. A light carried forward at night.
