FROM SCULPTURE TO SILVER

I’ve spent most of my life building things with my hands, forming metal, welding, carving, shaping and turning raw material into finished work.

Jewelry has become a smaller extension of that same process. The scale may be different, but the approach is much the same.

Each piece is built by hand in my studio using sterling silver and carefully selected natural high grade turquoise. Many of the stones begin as rough material that I cut, shape and polish myself before building the silver around them.

I’m drawn to pieces that still show the hand of the maker… hammer marks, texture, weight and subtle imperfections that make each piece its own.

Small scale sculpture made to be worn.

THE STONE

NATURAL STONE

I look for turquoise and other natural stones with interesting color, matrix and character rather than perfect uniformity. Whenever possible, I start with rough material and cut and shape the cabochon specifically for the piece I'm building.

You’ll see stones from different mines and regions as I find material that catches my eye, each with its own color, pattern and history.

The stone comes first. The silver gets built around it.

BUILT BY HAND

Every piece is fabricated individually from sterling silver using traditional silversmithing techniques, cutting, forming, soldering, stamping, hammering and finishing by hand.

I tend toward heavier silver, substantial shanks and simple details that frame the stone rather than compete with it.

There are no production molds and no assembly line. Each piece starts as raw silver and stone and is worked from beginning to end by hand in my studio.

Silver. Stone. Fire. Made by hand.

ONE OF ONE

Natural stone doesn’t repeat itself, and neither should the jewelry built around it.

Most of my pieces are designed around a specific stone and made only once. Even when I revisit a design, differences in the stone and the handmade process mean no two pieces will ever be exactly the same.

When one is gone, that particular combination of stone, silver and handwork goes with it.

One stone. One piece.
