Creek Sentinel

Creek Sentinel is a large scale sculptural interpretation of an old oak standing at the water’s edge a place of shelter, observation, and life.
Built around a faceted geometric trunk, the sculpture rises into angular branches and clusters of oak leaves. A heron stands beneath the canopy while a smaller bird rests among the branches, introducing the wildlife that inhabits these environments without taking the focus away from the tree itself.
Designed to be fabricated in Corten weathering steel, Creek Sentinel will develop its own natural rust patina as it ages outdoors. The warm, changing surface gives the steel an organic quality while the angular construction reveals something unmistakably built by hand.
FROM CONCEPT TO MAQUETTE
Creek Sentinel began as a hand-drawn concept and has since been developed into a fully fabricated scale maquette.
The maquette allowed me to physically work through the proportions, geometry, branch placement, canopy, wildlife and overall silhouette before translating the sculpture to steel. Each section of the trunk and branches was individually designed, cut and assembled to understand how the faceted forms interact from different viewing angles.
Rather than simply enlarging a drawing, the final sculpture will grow directly from this physical model.
